Mumbai: The Hindi film industry which always emphasises the saying that it salutes the rising sun does hold its preponderance when Vivek Agnihotri, a victim of cancel culture establishes his mettle against all odds stacked up against him. Vivek Agnihotri had all sorts of issues working against him the moment he announced The Kashmir Files in 2020. Right from the casting hurdles, getting producers to back it, to receiving fatwas while on shoot till fighting for media space and ensuring sufficient screens for release, it has been a tumultuous ride for him. The 360-degree change is not just about Box Office. But, a lot of things have changed surrounding Vivek Agnihotri. He is being followed by the paparazzi more often. The latest being him clicked by the shutterbugs outside kromakay salon at Bandra recently. The bitter truth is that failure has no one to standby. Even cancel culture based on political inclinations has failed when critical acclaim, success and moolah at the box office were doing the real talking. Content is the real king and cancels culture had to concede its defeat to the makers of The Kashmir Files.

Vivek Agnihotri doesn't shy away from political standpoints and his alignment with the policies of the present BJP Ruled government at the centre is well known. He has been the poster boy of the Right Wing ideology. He doesn't mince words and takes up fights on Twitter with those on the other side of the fence. As a result, the other side had branded him, a bigot and discredited his talent based on his previous work like chocolate, Hate Story calling them a porn Filmmaker.

He by design became a victim of cancel culture. The Kashmir Files had no prominent star cast. Advertisements and media coverage was almost negligible. All of these can be attributed to the unstated ban and boycott of the director from getting any sort of help in making his film and getting a well-deserved release like any other film. He has avoided just a plague. Even the co-producers Zee Studios were having very lukewarm promotions. Now the tables have turned and all A-listers and the noted filmmakers have spoken favourably for the film. Those who ridiculed him for his ideology calling him a fascist supporter are now singing praises for his smartness in delivering a blockbuster worth 300 crores worldwide at just a 15 Crore budget. From the ardent cynics of Agnihotri like Hansal Mehta, Taapsee Pannu to the always tight-lipped A-listers like Aamir Khan, Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Abhishek Bachchan, Karan Johar, Salman Khan, Subhash Ghai, Ritesh Deshmukh and many more spoke in favour or extended their support via call. Veteran director Ram Gopal Varma has heaved praises upon the film stating how Vivek has destroyed Bollywood and established Vivekwood. Apart from the tinsel town, the politicians, bureaucrats and social media influencers who have been in support of Agnihotri have been vocal about the film from day 1.

The continuous updates of the Box office by trade analysts ensured more voices who shied away from expressing themselves came up and spoke for the film. Journalists also who didn’t identify with the politics of Agnihotri were left with no option but to report and write about it. In the scenario before March 11, the release date was completely different. Many thought it would sink without a trace or at maximum would get some decent earnings like that of The Tashkent Files. But as soon as the tides changed at Box Office with The Kashmir Files demolishing both Radhe Shyam and Bachchan Pandey, the writing on the wall was pretty clear. Armchair tactics, controlled PR machinery and the use of cancel culture within the fraternity won't work for the audiences at large. More so, it proved even the naysayers are ready to sacrifice their ideological bent when it comes to Success no matter which side the person is standing with.
