From Andheri East Rapper Divine makes it to New York’s Times Square Street

Rapper, singer and music composer Divine, who is regarded as one of finest rappers in India’s and Mumbai’s underground rapping scene, has featured in New York’s Times Square street which is known as a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center for his latest album ‘Punya Paap’.

Divine started rapping from Andheri East where he was brought up in his early days. There are very few Indian artistes whose work has featured on electronic banners of New York’s Times Square and Divine became one of those artistes which is a huge achievement in itself.

Sharing his inspirational journey on his Instagram handle on Friday, Divine Aka Vivian Fernandes shared a few pictures of himself as his latest album ‘Punya Paap’ featured on Times Square, he wrote, “Andheri East Mumbai se Times Square New York!!! Zindagi meri shehnai…sapne dekhte rehneka. @spotifyindia @gullygangindia #punyapaap @massappealindia #Indianhiphopiswinning”.

Divine’s friends and colleagues from music, film and television industry such as Zoya Akhtar, Jonita Gandhi, Erika Packard, Sid Sriram, Sukriti Kakar, Shalmali Kholgade, Prajakta Koli, Ali Fazal, Armaan Malik, Prateik Babbar, Ankur Tewari and many more congratulated him on his special day.

Divine often raps about his own life experiences, such as the life of the poor people in Mumbai and his upbringing with a single mother. He cites American rappers such as Nas, Eminem, Big L, Tupac and Rakim as his inspirations.

Divine has collaborated with Anurag Kashyap for his film ‘Mukkabaaz’ for a song titled ‘Paintra’. He also collaborated with Amit Trivedi for Irrfan Khan starrer film ‘Blackmail’ and with Netflix for ‘Sacred Games’.

Divine most notably contributed to the soundtrack of the 2019 film ‘Gully Boy’ by Zoya Akhtar, a film which is inspired by the lives of Naezy and himself, with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. Divine and Naezy both helped as consultants to get an authentic representation of the Hip Hop culture for the film.

In February 2019 he announced the founding of a new company, Gully Gang Entertainment, a record label to recruit and produce Hip Hop talent in the Mumbai area. On August 2019, American rapper Nas’ Mass Appeal Records and Universal Music India launched Mass Appeal India and signed Divine. Universal Music Group and Mass Appeal jointly took the step to take global hip-hop artist to India and globalize the Indian hip-hop scene.

Divine’s first album ‘Kohinoor’ which ruled the charts released in October 2019. His second album, ‘Punya Paap’, was released on 3 December 2020, under the label Mass Appeal India. It consists of 11 tracks, with features from Nas, Cocoa Sarai, Dutchavelli, Stylo G, D’ Evil, MC Altaf, Lisa Mishra and Phenom.

The album has a blend of old school 808 patterns and new heavy, trap-hop beats with a lot of sampled loops, produced by some of finest producers from the Indian rap scene, like Stunnah Beats, Ill Wayno, Karan Kanchan, and more. The album has an overall ominous theme, and chronicles Divine’s struggles and rise to the top in the Indian Hip Hop scene.
