Prince Harry Is The Trendsetter, Not Meghan Markle

Before Meghan Markle married Prince Harry, the expectation was that she would raise the bar for Royal fashion. But so far, she hasn’t been the style rebel that many had hoped for. Since she became the Duchess of Sussex, Markle’s fashion sense has started to blend into the rest of the family instead of standing out. So, it looks like her husband has stepped in to become the family’s latest trendsetter – and it has everything to do with that beard.

According to Pure Wow, Prince Harry has sparked a beard renaissance, and the sales for beard-care products like razors and oils have skyrocketed a whopping 226 percent in the last couple of years. And, Harry sporting a full beard at his wedding definitely helped the numbers.

Prince Harry hasn’t been bare face for a while. He has had the beard since the royal engagement announcement last fall. It looks like he took “No Shave November” and extended it year-round.

As for Markle, she has stuck with muted colors and loose dresses in the past few weeks, and she has only worn pants once to a public appearance. The criticism of her new subdued style started on her wedding day, when many dismissed her dress as “boring,” and accused her of playing it safe.

Instead of wearing a dress featuring any kind of lace, beads, or tulle, she went with a minimalist Givenchy gown that had a boat neck and clean lines. The biggest criticism of the dress was that it didn’t fit Markle well, even though it was a sleek, timeless design.

Celebrity stylist and designer Katharine Polk said, “As royalty, there is no excuse for less than perfection when everyone is looking at you. For a modern-day woman, I think everyone was expecting something a little more daring, so it was a bit of an anti-climax.”

But, her sleeveless Stella McCartney reception dress was more of Markle’s style, and it received much better reviews.

Meghan’s Mirror fashion blog founder Amanda Dishaw says that Markle wearing the two different dresses was a “balancing act,” and we will see the Duchess of Sussex continue to grow and adapt to the overwhelming life changes she has gone through.

Since the wedding, Markle has gone with a more conservative style than she has in the past. She has opted for muted colors like oatmeal and blush instead of the more colorful choices she wore before walking down the aisle.

She wore a white collared dress and black and white hat to the Royal Ascot and went with a baggy white and blue dress at a recent wedding. She also wore pantyhose on a few occasions (with many in fashion believing that look to be “dated and dowdy”) and turned her messy bun into a sleeker style.

The neutral colors and coiffed hairstyle do have the potential of getting boring, according to Polk, but many believe Markle will take more risks as time goes on.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may not be rocking the fashion boat, but they are going against royal protocol by often holding hands and kissing in public.
