After making a successful comeback with English Vinglish, Sridevi returned to the big screen last year with Mom. ‘Mom’ was one of the many films based on rape revenge that released last year and perhaps it was the best of the lot. In the film, Sridevi played a grief-stricken mother to a daughter who was raped.
Sridevi’s portrayal got her immense critical acclaim from all quarters. Critics hailed her performance for being as real as it gets. There is not an iota of doubt about the fact that Sridevi was one of the greatest actresses of all time, but the credit for her believable performance also goes to her off-screen equation with her on-screen daughter in the film Sajal Ali.
Sridevi was very close to Sajal. So much so, that during the promotions of Mom, she had even shed tears while talking about her co-stars from Pakistan. The recluse that was Sridevi, she had bonded with Sajal during the shoot of Mom. A report in Deccan Chronicle had stated, “Normally, Sridevi doesn’t mix with her colleagues at all. Not now, not earlier, never. She is a complete professional on the sets. Even in real life, she hardly has any friends. But with Sajal, her equation was different.”
The report further stated, “Sajal lost her mother recently, whom she was very close to. It shattered the girl. Sridevi took Sajal under her wings after the tragedy, treated the girl like her own daughter. Afterwards, Sajal called Sridevi from her home-town in Pakistan and broke down saying the whole experience was too close to her to be treated as a film.”
So, it was no less than a shock for Sajal when she learned about the death of her “Mom”. She took to Instagram and wrote, “Lost my mom again…”
Sridevi’s mortal remains are expected to land in India today and her last rites will be performed subsequently.
