Rani Mukerji was present at the trailer launch of her upcoming film ‘Hichki’ on Tuesday. During media interaction, the actress said she suffered from stammering as a kid.
Rani who plays the lead role of a teach suffering from turrets syndrome said she used to suffer for speech impairment herself, “I used to stammer when I was a kid and my mom used to too, and my elder brother still does. I have overcome the issue a lot because as an actress I have to say many dialogues, express many emotions and stammering usually takes place and is highly noticeable when you are emotionally affected.I had to control it a lot and work a lot on it but the good thing is if you can overcome it you can make your weakness your strength.
Talking about the significance of the double lines under ‘h’, and the brackets in the film’s name Mukerji said, “I am playing the character of a teacher and I am dealing with subjects like Maths and science so the double lines in the name suggest the ‘equals’ sign in Maths and the brackets since we use it a lot during equations.”
Hichki, celebrates self-belief, the resilience of human spirit and hope. The film is about turning disadvantages into opportunities and staring down at challenges and ultimately winning over them.
When asked if talking about the speech impairment issues with the movie will help bring awareness about it, the actress said “First of all, I would like to say this isn’t a subject it is a part of many lives. The people who suffer from the syndrome are challenged in every part of their lives. During research for the role, I am met many kids who suffered from it and their parents.”
“People in India are shying away from accepting that they are suffering from the syndrome but in countries like the US people have become stand up comedians who have such speech impairment. the more we talk about it the more, people in India will also acknowledge it,” she added.
‘Hichki’ is directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Maneesh Sharma under the banner of Yash Raj Films.
The movie is slated for 23rd February 2018 release.
