Bollywood Celebrities like Bhumi Pednekar, Shilpa Shetty, and Dia Mirza support Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial Padmavati.
In the wake of Karni Sena and political groups protesting Padmavati, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh, which chronicles the life of Rani Padmini, Bollywood has come out in support of filmmaker and freedom of expression.
Toilet Ek Prem Katha actress Bhumi Pednekar expressed that “freedom of expression” is right of every filmmaker.
“I am too young to understand the Business or what is happening in Industry. But I think there should be freedom of speech, it is every filmmaker’s right and I am very excited to watch Padmavati” said Bhumi Pednekar, when asked about Karni Sena demanding a ban on the film.
Shilpa Shetty, who has courted many controversies regarding her stint in Bigg Boss and Kissing Richard Gere on stage, said, “I feel really bad that creative expression is being oppressed, with due respect to all the feelings and sentiments, I think films as long as are not sending out a bad message, and a bit of cinematic liberty is okay but as long as it doesn’t hurt somebody’s dignity, I think filmmaker must be allowed to express themselves through cinema. I hope something good comes out of it”
Dia Mirza, who has always been the front-runner of empowerment, said film industry is turning into a political tool.
“Film Industry is not scared neither nervous. Unfortunately, our industry is turned into some political tool over and over again and we are made soft targets. I really hope that the law enforcement agencies and government try and understand the gravity of this situation and take some strict and appropriate action”
“People are objecting about the film without even watching it, this is wrong. How could someone object to film without watching it? This is a democratic society, so there should be freedom of expression in democracy” added Dia.
The film features Deepika Padukone in the title role as Rani Padmavati, alongside Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji, with Aditi Rao Hydari and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.
The film is scheduled for release in 3D on 1 December 2017.
