Pratik Sharma director of Gutrun Gutar Gun moves to court against Toilet ek prem Katha.
Toilet ek Prem Katha starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar has been in news due to its similarities with the story of Gutrun Gutar Gun. The film directed by Pratik Sharma highlights the problem of houses without toilets, which is the central plot of Toilet Ek Prem Katha as well. The director of Gutrun Gutar Gun has appealed to court as he claims his film has been in working since 2015.
Pratik Sharma in a personal interview with News Helpline spoke about why they decided to go to court for the film. “The only option we had was to wait for their release and then release ours, but it wasn’t our problem that the film’s story was similar. We were working on ours since 2015. So many people had seen the movie at so many places. The only option left for us was to go to the court and ask for justice.”
A copyright infringement case has been filed by Sharma against Plan C Studios, an alliance between Reliance Entertainment and Friday Filmworks helmed by Neeraj Pandey and Shital Bhatia, and Viacom18 on July 7 in a Jaipur Metropolitan Court. The court has issued a notice returnable on July 22.
Pratik Sharma, the film Gutrun Gutar Gun’s co writer and director spoke about the film and the process that they had been through, “We were going to release the film on 28thJuly, we had also spoken to our distributors and exhibitors. Our process was on track we were going to start promoting the film since 1st July. When we were supposed to sign a contract with our distributors, they told us they had a new condition. This was happening after Toilet ek Prem Katha’s trailer was launched.
The condition they kept was if they receive any call by other film makers, they might have to drop our film’s screening. Our 3 years of hard work within few minutes was minimized to zero.” Said Pratik.
Asmita Sharma who has not just acted in the film but has also produced the film, and co written the script said, “ We are not feeling pressured at all. If we felt any kind of pressure we wouldn’t have come ahead with the facts. When we were going to approach for a court case, we were told , the other film has big names attached to it, a court case won’t help. But I think it shouldn’t matter to the court. Court will only look for proof which we have. 1000’s of people have seen the film, they know the truth.”
Gutrun Gutar Gun starring Chandrashekhar and Asmita Sharma is about lack of basic sanitation in villages and depicts their day to day challenges in village life. The film has been screened at Film festivals in Rajasthan, Melbourne and Toronto South Asia Indie film festival. The film was also screened for Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and other dignitaries.
The film makers are waiting for result from court for the film’s fate.
