Madhubala. Madhubala was an active actress between 1942 and 1960. During that time she was regarded as one of the most influential personalities of Hindi movies. She was also considered to be one of the most beautiful actresses to have worked in the industry. Madhubala received wide recognition for her performances in Bollywood films like Mahal, Amar, Mr. & Mrs. ’55 and Barsaat Ki Raat. Madhubala’s performance in the film  Mughal-e-Azam established her as an iconic actress. Madhubala died on 23 February 1969 after a prolonged illness.

Juhi Chawla. An actress and film producer, Juhi Chawla has has worked predominantly in Hindi language films, in addition to Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Bengali and Kannada language films.   In 1983 she won the Miss India beauty contest, which launched her acting career. One of the leading actresses of Bollywood in the 1990s, Chawla has garnered particular praise for her comic timing. Juhi Chawla made her film debut in 1986 in the film Sultanat. She received wider public recognition with the highly successful tragic romance Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which she won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. She established herself in Bollywood with leading roles in romantic dramas and comedies, such as Bol Radha Bol, Gaya Gentleman and others.  In addition to acting, Chawla is a television personality, a humanitarian, and the co-owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders.

Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka Chopra is an actress and singer, and the winner of the Miss World pageant of 2000. Chopra has become one of Bollywood’s highest-paid actresses and one of the most popular celebrities in India. She has received numerous accolades, including a National Film Award for Best Actress and Filmfare Awards in four categories. Chopra at one time aspired to study engineering or psychiatry, but instead accepted offers to join the Indian film industry, which came as a result of her pageant wins. Her acting debut came in 2002 in the Tamil film Thamizhan. The following year, she starred in The Hero, her first Hindi film release, and followed it with the box-office hit Andaaz. After a series of unsuccessful films, she received critical acclaim for the role of a troubled model in the 2008 drama Fashion, which marked a significant turning point in her career.

Rani Mukerji. Through her successful Bollywood career, she has become one of the most high-profile celebrities in India. She has won several awards, including seven Filmfare Awards. Her film roles have been cited as a significant departure from the traditional portrayal of women in Bollywood. Although Mukerji was born into a family where many relatives were members of the Indian film industry, she did not aspire to pursue a career in film. As a teenager she began too dabble with acting by playing a supporting role in her father’s Bengali language film Biyer Phool. Later she accepted a leading role in the 1997 social drama Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat on the insistence of her mother. The following year, she began a full-time career in film and gained recognition for a supporting role in the blockbuster romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. By 2004, Mukerji had established herself as a leading actress of Bollywood with roles in the romantic comedy Hum Tum and the dramas Yuva and Veer-Zaara.

Sonam Kapoor. The daughter of actor Anil, Sonam Kapoor began her career in film by assisting the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on his 2005 drama film Black. Kapoor made her acting debut in 2007 with Bhansali’s romantic drama Saawariya. Though unsuccessful at the box office, Kapoor’s performance earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. She then featured in the political drama Delhi-6, and had her first commercial success with the romantic comedy I Hate Luv Storys. Kapoor earned several Best Actress nominations for portraying a leading role in the romantic drama Raanjhanaa. Besides acting, Kapoor is a celebrity endorser for several brands and products. She is particularly known in the media for her outspoken personality, and is cited as one of the most fashionable Indian celebrities.

Tabu. Tabu once held the record for the most Best Actress wins at Filmfare, with four. She has received the National Film Award for Best Actress twice. Tabu is best known for playing protagonists in films that garner more critical appreciation than substantial box office figures. Her most famous performances were in the films Maachis, Virasat, Hu Tu Tu, Maqbool, Cheeni Kum and Haider.  She was featured briefly in Ang Lee’s highly successful adventure film Life of Pi. Tabu is regarded as one of the most accomplished actresses in India. She is reluctant to discuss her personal life in the media, which has led to her being labelled a recluse.

Sridevi. Sridevi is regarded as the first female superstar of Hindi Cinema. She started her career as a child artist in M.A. Thirumugham’s devotional Thunaivan at the age of four. She made her Bollywood debut as a child artist in the hit Julie and played her first adult role at age 13 with the Tamil film Moondru Mudichu. In Bollywood, she has marked her debut as a lead actress with Solva Sawan and she gained wide public attention with blockbuster movie Himmatwala. In 2012, Sridevi returned to films after a 15 year long hiatus, becoming the only actress in the history of Hindi Cinema to make a highly successful comeback. In 2013 she was voted ‘India’s Greatest Actress in 100 Years’ in a CNN-IBN national poll.

Now known as Madhuri Dixit-Nene after her marriage, she was previously known just as Madhuri. Madhuri was a leading actress in Bollywood in the 1980s, 1990s and early-2000s. She has been praised by critics for her acting, beauty, and dancing. She has received six Filmfare Awards, four for Best Actress, one for Best Supporting Actress and one special award. She has also been nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress a record fourteen times. She was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, by the Government of India in 2008. Madhuri made her film debut in 1984 with the film Abodh. In addition to acting in films, Madguri has featured as a talent judge for four seasons of the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

Kajol. Kajol has received six Filmfare Awards from eleven nominations. Along with her late aunt Nutan, she has won a record, five Best Actress wins at Filmfare. In 2011, the Government of India awarded her with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of the country. Born to actress Tanuja and film director Shomu Mukherjee, Kajol made her acting debut with Bekhudi while still in school. She dropped out of school to pursue acting, and had her first commercial success came 1993 with the thriller Baazigar. Following a sabbatical from full-time acting in 2001, Kajol returned to film with the 2006 romantic film, Fanaa. She continued working infrequently through the rest of the decade, and earned critical acclaim for her work in U Me Aur Hum and My Name Is Khan.

Kajol. Hema Malini is a very versatile woman in Bollywood. She is an actress, director, producer, Bharatanatyam dancer-choreographer, and a politician. Deepika Padukone. An actress and model, Deepika Padukone has established a successful career in Bollywood films, and is acknowledged as one of the most popular and attractive Indian celebrities. Deepika is the daughter of the badminton player Prakash Padukone, and as a teenager she followed her fathers lead and played badminton in national level championships. She left her career in sports to become a fashion model. She soon received offers for film roles, and made her acting debut in 2006 in the Kannada film Aishwarya. Padukone then played dual roles in her first Bollywood release, Om Shanti Om. From this film she won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Vidya Balan. Vidya Balan’s career in Bollywood has garnered several awards, including a National Film Award, five Filmfare Awards, and five Screen Awards. She was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2014. She is known for playing strong female roles and has been acknowledged in the media for pioneering a change in the concept of a Hindi film heroine. As a child Vidya knew that she wanted a career in film. Her first acting role came in the 1995 sitcom Hum Paanch. She later pursued a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Mumbai and simultaneously made several unsuccessful attempts to start a career in film. She featured in various television commercials and music videos, and in 2003 made her feature film debut as the protagonist of the independent Bengali drama Bhalo Theko.

Rekha. Rekha Ganesan, better known as just Rekha, is an actress noted for her versatility and acknowledged as one of the finest actresses in Hindi cinema. Rekha started her career in 1966 as a child actress in the film Rangula Ratnam. Her film debut as a lead happened four years later with Sawan Bhadon. Despite the success of several of her early films, she was often only  cast for her looks and it was not until the 1970s that she received recognition as an actress. Rekha has been in the film industry for over 40 years and acted in over 180 films.

Sharmila Tagore. Sharmila Tagore has won National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards for her performances. She has led the Indian Film Censor Board from October 2004 till March 2011. In December 2005, Tagore was chosen as an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In 2013, she was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. Tagore began her career as an actress in Satyajit Ray’s 1959 Bengali film Apur Sansar (The World of Apu). She later appeared in Shakti Samanta’s Kashmir Ki Kali in 1964. Sharnila Tagore became the firrst Indian actress to appear in a bikini in the film An Evening in Paris. This established her as a sex symbol in Bollywood.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was the winner of the Miss World pageant of 1994 . Her pageant win was the start of her successful Bollywood career.  She quickly established herself as one the most popular and high-profile celebrities in India. She made her acting debut with the 1997 Tamil film Iruvar and had her first Hindi film release in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya that same year. Aishwarya has received several awards, including two Filmfare Awards from ten nominations. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2009 and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Government of France in 2012. Many media outlets have called her the “most beautiful woman in the world”.
