I feel censorship is necessary in our country says Tigmanshu Dhulia

On Thursday, Tigmanshu Dhulia interacted with media on the eve of release of his next film Raagdesh in Mumbai. During an interview, Tigmanshu stated that censorship is necessary in our country to control certain things as India is country of different religions.

Censorship is now days target point of many filmmakers as they always have creative differences with censor board before the release of the film, replying to that, Tigmanshu said, “Now days, censor board makes film’s marketing and people are now spending less money on marketing as they create some kind of controversy with most of the films and films are benefited from it but I feel censorship is also necessary in India as there are many communities and religion unlike other countries of the world so we should have certain kind of censorship but authorities should also decide some parameter of censorship. It shouldn’t be influenced by political ideologies and some time I have noticed that some big filmmakers and production houses able to get their film UA certificate despite questionable content in their film so I feel this biased attitude of CBFC shouldn’t be there”.

There were reports that, Salman Khan will refund distributors to compensate for losses incurred by his Eid release Tubelight, reacting to that, Tigmanshu said, “It’s really nice act from the side of Salman Khan. Earlier, these things used to happen but unfortunately in the middle period people have forget those ethics”.

Tigmanshu also condemned terrorist attack on Amarnath pilgrims which involved Muslim terror outfit. He said, “What should I express, my heart cries seeing all this. It’s a completely shameful and unfortunate act. There are no bigger cowards than them who executed this attack. They have no religion. Islam as religion doesn’t preach these acts but they have been brainwashed by some wrong people”.

Tigmanshu also talked about current generation of directors, he said, “The current generations of directors who came from outside Mumbai like me, Anurag Basu, Anurag Kashyap, Sujoy Ghosh, Dibakar Banerjee, Shoojit Sircar, Imtiaz Ali, Sriram Raghavan they are doing really good work. They have fresh and unique way of storytelling which reflects from their films”.

Talking about his film Raagdesh, he said, “It’s a different film. Audience is so used to see typical bollywood masala film but Raagdesh not a typical Bollywood film and I think it’s a good thing because if we want to compete with international cinema then we need to raise the standard of our films as today audience is exposed to world cinema whether they belong to small town or metro cities and I feel Raagdesh is proper step towards that exercise. We have made this film with lot of hard work. It’s not bambaiya film (Masala) yet it is very engaging, entertaining and educative”.

Tigmanshu also commented on corporate entry into film content producing business, he said, “Earlier when corporate wasn’t there in films, our film’s success ratio was better. Each year we release around 250 films and out of that only 2-3 films are big hits and other 5-6 are moderate success but no one know results of remaining films. There is only positive thing happening after entry of corporate is that, it is supporting different kind of films especially small budgets films which are high on content and new technicians are getting work. They are able to nurture the talent in the industry but before that they were selling soaps or ships and now they are selling films. They don’t understand cinema and I feel they don’t have love for the film”.

Raagdesh stars Mohit Marwah, Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor in lead roles. It is produced by Rajysabha TV.

Raagdesh is releasing on 28 July, 2107.
