One of India’s finest actresses, Nargis Dutt was commemorated in Google’s Doodle on Monday in tribute of what would have been her 86th birthday.
Fatima Rashid, better known by her screen name Nargis, was born on 1 June 1929. She made her screen debut as a child artist in Talash-E-Haq in 1935, but it was her film Tamana (1942) which brought her prominence in the Indian film industry.
The actress best known for her role as Radha in the Academy Award nominated Mother India (1957) appeared in numerous commercially successful as well as critically appreciated films, many of which featured her alongside noted Indian actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor.
After her marriage to Mother India co-star Sunil Dutt in 1958, the actress quit the film industry. However, she was later seen appearing in a films including the drama Raat Aur Din (1967), for which she was given the inaugural National Film Award for Best Actress.
he along with her husband became involved in social work and formed the Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe, roping in leading actors and singers from the film industry and held stage shows at border areas.
The mother of Munna Bhai actor Sanjay Dutt, passed away in 1981 due to pancreatic cancer. In 1982, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was established in memory of the late actress.
In her honour, the award for Best Feature Film on National Integration in the annual National Film Awards ceremony is called the Nargis Dutt Award.
